It is uncertain when the original residence (Yakata) was built. The residence was expanded and rebuilt into castle in the Sengoku period. Afterwards the castle fell into the Hōjōfs hand and was abandoned when the Hōjō clan was ruined in 1590.
Some of old picture maps in the Edo period depicting the Nanbata castle remained until today. Most of the maps excepting one have approximately same composition, so that they are copies of the original map.
